Nigeria’s ambition to expand electricity access requires solutions that can reach underserved communities, businesses and public institutions more quickly and sustainably. While grid expansion remains important, distributed renewable energy (DRE)—including mini-grids, standalone solar systems and other decentralised solutions—offers a critical pathway to closing the electricity access gap. Yet despite an active market and significant investment opportunities, scaling DRE in Nigeria continues to face challenges with financing, affordability, regulatory coordination, project preparation and the development of sustainable electricity demand.

Through Mission 300 and Nigeria’s National Energy Compact, the focus is on accelerating electricity access and creating the conditions for effective implementation, private-sector participation, and long-term investment. The upcoming Mission 300 DRE Stakeholder Engagement in Nigeria is designed to bring together government institutions, regulators, development partners, financiers, investors, and market participants to examine these challenges and agree on practical actions to accelerate deployment. Beyond identifying constraints, the engagement aims to strengthen coordination, mobilise financing, improve project bankability, and establish clear priorities, institutional responsibilities, and implementation milestones.

In this episode of the Green Circle Podcast, The Electricity Hub speaks with Diran Adesua, DRE Pillar Lead at the Mission 300 Nigeria Compact Delivery and Monitoring Unit (CDMU), ahead of the stakeholder engagement. The conversation explores the priorities underpinning the engagement, the interventions needed to unlock Nigeria’s DRE market, and how collaboration between the public and private sectors can translate Mission 300’s electricity access ambitions into measurable outcomes for communities, businesses, and the wider economy.
